Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy attempts to address an individual’s sub-conscious mind, using the power of suggestion for beneficial change. Hypnotherapists require the individual to be in a deeply relaxed state to enable them to use their imagination fully and for the sub-conscious to be open to the suggestions put to it.
The are two main forms of hypnotherapy:
- Suggestion hypnotherapy which involves the hypnotherapist giving an individual unconscious mind a series of ‘suggestions.’ These suggestions can help an individual to successfully pursue their conscious goals i.e. stop smoking.
- Analytical hypnotherapy can be effective in dealing with deeper issues and involves psychotherapy using hypnosis. It seeks to find the root cause of a problem and deal with the issue. This usually takes more time and commitment than suggestion hypnotherapy, however, the results are very often life changing.
Will I know what is happening?
Yes, if anything you will more aware of what is happening. Although your eyes are closed and you are extremely relaxed your other senses can increase their awareness and sensitivity. You are always aware of what is being said and what is happening. You are not asleep or unconscious. You will remember everything that happens to you, however, because most clients receive a great deal of information it may take days, weeks or months to really process.
Will I lose control?
No, you remain in control at all times. The hypnotherapist does not have control over you and if you decide to get up and walk out, then you will be able to. Hypnosis is very much a ‘consent’ state and you cannot be made to do anything against your will. You will not say anything that is embarrassing and will not reveal any more than you are comfortable with. If the hypnotherapist says anything you disagree with or makes you uncomfortable, then you are able to simply bring yourself out of the hypnotic state.
What can it be used for?
Hypnosis is widely accepted as a beneficial psychological therapy to access our inner potential. Techniques can be used to reveal issues that may be causing distress or it can be focussed upon more present problems. Hypnotherapy can generally help with most emotional and physical problems an individual is finding hard to cope with. What is the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is a totally natural state of mind that we experience regularly. It is a mid-way point between being awake and being asleep. It is a deeply relaxed state, conducive to deep physical and mental relaxation.
Hypnotherapy is a process of applying, while in Hypnosis, therapeutic suggestion/intervention to release the negative elements that are driving the particular unwanted behaviour or problem . While in a hypnotic state your sub-conscious is more open to suggestion, thus allowing the hypnotist to align you conscious and sub-conscious goals through hypnotherapy.
Can anyone be Hypnotised?
Yes, most people can be as long as they want to be and they understand the instructions that are given to them. According to the British Society of Clinical Hypnosis it is estimated that 85% of people will respond to clinical hypnotherapy. Some individuals are more likely to respond than others and having confidence in the technique helps as well as being personally motivated for change. The very small minority of people who have trouble in a session are usually those who:
- Don’t really want to be hypnotised, perhaps because they don’t believe they can be.
- Can’t relax and let go enough, because they fear loss of control or fearing the unknown.
- Do not understand the hypnotist, language barriers or hearing problems.
Some things that you can do to increase your ability to go under hypnosis quickly and easily are meditation, visualisation, yoga and relaxation techniques.
Is it dangerous?
No, you are perfectly safe as hypnosis helps bring harmony and healing to body, mind and spirit. You cannot become ‘stuck’ in a hypnotic state, you just wake normally once all suggestion had ceased or would drift into a normal sleep; this is especially true if you are listening to a CD at home.
